Frequently asked questions
How do I get access?
Noter is invite-only while it's being tested. Ask for an invite with the email you want to use. Once it's added, open Noter and sign in with the link we email you.
Is Noter free?
Yes, while it's in testing. Later there may be a free plan with limits and a small paid plan to cover hosting costs. You'll be told well in advance, and your notes stay exportable whatever you decide.
Who can read my notes?
Only you, through your account. Nobody at Noter reads them (see the privacy policy). Each account can only reach its own notes, to-dos and images, and that rule is enforced by the database itself, not just by the app. We don't read your content, show ads or sell data. See the privacy policy for details.
Where is my data stored?
On secure cloud servers in Mumbai, India, encrypted on disk and sent over encrypted connections. Only you can read your notes. (Our hosting providers are listed in the Privacy policy.)
Can I export my notes?
Yes. Settings › Backup & restore downloads everything (notebooks, pages, images and to-dos) as one file, and any page can be exported as Markdown.
Can I bring notes from Notion, Evernote, OneNote or Zoho?
Yes. Export from the other app (Notion: Markdown & CSV zip; Evernote: .enex; OneNote: Word .docx per section; Zoho Notebook: export zip), then choose Settings › Backup & restore › Import. You see a preview before anything is added.
How do I use Noter on my laptop?
Install the desktop app from the Download page or open the web app, choose Link with your phone, and scan the QR code from your phone (Settings › Linked devices).
What is a locked notebook?
A notebook whose pages, images and tags are encrypted on your device with a passphrase only you know, before anything is saved. Nobody else can read them, including the people who run Noter. Lock a notebook from its ••• menu. If you forget the passphrase, the notes in locked notebooks can't be recovered.
Are there backups?
You can turn on encrypted nightly backups in Settings › Backup & restore. Noter keeps the last 5, encrypted with a key only you hold, in a separate place from the app's own storage.
Does it work on my phone and laptop?
Noter works in any modern browser. On Android you can install the app (see Download) or add Noter to your home screen from Chrome. A laptop app and QR-code linking between devices are on the way.
Does it work offline?
The app opens offline and shows what you last loaded. Saving needs a connection for now; full offline editing is planned.
Can I bring notes over from OneNote, Notion, Evernote or Zoho Notes?
Importers for all four are being built. Until then you can paste pages in, and images paste straight from the clipboard.
How do I delete my account?
Send a request through the contact form from the email you sign in with. We delete your account, notes, to-dos and images within 30 days and confirm when it's done. A self-service delete button is coming.
